HOW TO…

…make a presentation
PLAN

  • what do you want to convey to the audience
  • how do you think it would be illustrated the best
  • where you could come up with RELIABLE information (compare sources!)

EXECUTE

  • write down the outline of the presentation
  • choose presentation format
  • use illustrations and fresh statistics
  • be careful adding on ALL your sources as go along

PRESENT

  • state your case with poise
  • remember that you are the expert: to a lot of people in the audience your information is new
  • be bold, be proud of your work

…write a learning log or a reflective journal
The purpose of the learning log or a reflective journal is to enhance your individual thought processes and learning during the course.  How you choose to complete your learning log will depend on your own thinking and writing style: Some like to be very exact and to the point in their entries, some are more free in their style, reflecting on topics maybe only shortly mentioned in the classroom but that have invoked thoughts and feelings, that they feel need to be dealt with. Journals are generally more free flowing. They rely on opinion and on personal experience. Learning logs are –traditionally- concise, objective, factual and impersonal in tone.
I’d like this journal/ learning log to be a collection of your writings on each topic that we have dealt in class and also reports of the visits you have attended during the course. The style is free; whatever suits your personality best. Just know, that should you be very curt in your entries, at least the main subjects must be mentioned and “dealt with” somehow. It goes without saying that better marks are awarded for deeply reflective entries, which convey to the reader that the writer has somehow personally digested the topic.
The following questions could be useful in making thoughtful entries in learning logs/ journals:

  • What did I do in class today?
  • What did I learn/ think about the subject?
  • What did I find interesting?
  • What questions do I have about what I learned?
  • What was the point of today's lesson?
  • What connections did I make to previous ideas of lessons?
